Scrolling through the archive

I began this project by reverse image searching a photograph of my face and creating an archive of images that I algorithmically resemble. Reverse image search works using image hashing, a formula that compresses an image down to its most essential characteristics. This hash is then compared to an intangibly large database of images scrubbed from the internet, which have already been hashed, to identify images that are the most digitally similar- an entirely vision-less process.

These portraits explore appearance through the eyeless gaze of algorithms and machine learning and looks at how this compression of our exteriority changes the way we see ourselves.
